Gray Park Natural Area Education Programs
Education in the Park
Educational Programs are up and running in Gray Park Natural Area this fall! Local Foothills Teachers were given the opportunity to pilot a Gray Park educational program. There are four different programs that blend stories from the landscape with experiential outdoor learning. Informational scripts and interactive materials are packages in easy to use kits. To learn more about these program kits, check out the Gray Park Registration Page. Please pass this on to interested educators!
The first inaugural class in the park was the Grade 5/6's from Millarville. They learned about the Sheep River through the Flood Detective Program. Percy Pegler School followed with the Grade 1/2's from the Explore Nature Based Program. On a very cold, wintery day, they did some activities from Phenology in the Park. The highlight of the day was seeing a local Big Horn Owl. Both kids and parents were excited to learn about the existence of the park and said they would love to come back.
Education also took the form of public engagement. Gray Park partnered with Leith Monaghan from The Path Less Taken and Jessie Fiddler-Kiss from Auntie School, two local Foothills-based outdoor educators, for Light Up Diamond Valley. A booth was set up with interpretive and information materials. Leith ran a family-friendly program about antlers in "The Hunt for Santa's Reindeer" and Jessie shared her Métis knowledge of local plants and tea making. There was lots of positive support from the public who stopped by to say "hi".
It is exciting to see these programs come to fruition and to share further engagement and experiences in the future!
