About Us

Western Sky was requested by landowners and the general public. We are a non-profit charitable organization that has been specifically designed to meet the needs of the region and will focus on conserving watersheds associated with agricultural, natural, heritage, scenic and recreational values.

Please see our one page Western Sky Land Trust Overview document for more information.

We have chosen five major types of landscapes associated with our watershed focus:
  • Agricultural land that forms the backbone of our economy, stewards critical soil and water resources, provides food and shelter for animals, and significantly contributes to Canada's economy
  • Natural lands that can provide habitat for animals and plants and open spaces that benefit society
  • Historic resources which keep us connected with our past, teach us about that history, and contribute to our vision for the future.
  • Scenic places that are enjoyed by residents and recognized internationally by defining our sense of place
  • Recreational opportunities that contribute positively to our quality of life, health of our citizens, desirability of the region for tourism, and draw for businesses.
We are principally operating in the Calgary region.

Meet our Board and Staff

Our current board consists of members that have been either appointed or voted for by our membership. We have insured that we have members who reside in each municipality that we serve and all bring talents and expertise required to conduct the business of our organization. For continuity, Board members have been assigned 2 or 3 year terms which allow elections to be held every year at our annual general meeting.

We also have various working committees that have dedicated volunteers who provide their talents and expertise in assisting Western Sky. The committees are: Lands Committee, Finance Committee, Education Committee, Governance Committee, and Fund Development Committee.

We are currently seeking volunteers for both our Board of Directors and Working Committees. If you are committed to conservation, would like to assist in advancing our mandate, and have a background in one or more of these areas: ranching, farming, accounting/finance, communications, fund development or biology - we would be interested in hearing from you.
