Western Sky's Bow and Beyond Initiative

What is the Bow Initiative?

With the successful completion of the Agrium-Nodwell Nature Preserve, Western Sky Land Trust (Western Sky) is now focused on creating additional conservation opportunities along the stretch of the Bow River from Calgary to Siksika deemed by Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation to be of national significance.

The Bow River is one of Alberta's most prominent treasures drawing both residents and international visitors with its natural features and recreational opportunities. It is also habitat for wildlife, a source of drinking water, and a resource for agricultural and industrial activity. By identifying the importance of land conservation and its link to the health of this watershed, we have developed the Bow and Beyond Initiative. The Bow Initiative is a collective of efforts to promote voluntary land conservation both on this stretch of the Bow River and elsewhere in the watersheds of our region.

Please see our Bow Initiative Summary for more information.

If you value the Bow River as a precious resource - support Western Sky now to facilitate these conservation efforts!

Western Sky Land Trust's Agrium-Nodwell Nature Preserve

'Western Sky Land Trust's Agrium-Nodwell Nature Preserve' is now conserved. This 59-acre parcel of unusually pristine natural landscape in the Bow River corridor just east of Calgary borders what many Alberta fly fishers know as the best stretch of trout habitat in the world. We will preserve it in perpetuity for the benefit of fishers, outdoor enthusiasts, and future generations of Albertans. This parcel abuts Wyndham-Carseland Provincial Park, about 50km southeast of Calgary.

The parcel is within the already designated Environmentally Significant Area of International Importance.

Western Sky Land Trust's Agrium-Nodwell Nature Preserve:
  • Extremely high biodiversity

  • Nesting songbird habitat, plus breeding areas for fish-eating birds like belted kingfishers, American white pelicans, great blue herons and cormorants.

  • Spring & fall migration habitat (staging & nesting area for waterfowl).

  • Bow River Valley riparian areas provide wildlife movement corridors for feeding, rearing and seasonal use habitats.

  • Sportfish include rainbow & brown trout, mountain whitefish, walleye, pike.

The land will be managed to conserve its natural values. Please contact us to let us know when you intend to visit.
