Welcome to the Western Sky Land Trust, a unique conservation organization

Agricultural land, river valleys, native grasslands, productive wetlands and wooded escarpments – our landscapes define us as a community. But more than that, healthy landscapes are essential for sustainable agriculture, clean water, wildlife habitat and recreation. Western Sky Land Trust is working to conserve treasured landscapes in the Rocky View, Foothills, Wheatland, Big Horn and the Calgary region for future generations.

"Western Sky Land Trust is well positioned to conserve the changing landscape of southern Alberta. It is an area of tremendous aesthetic and recreational value."
David Bissett, Philanthropist & Conservation Advocate

    An Outstanding Conservation Partnership

Western Sky Land Trust recently completed a conservation easement (CE) for the Mattheis Ranch, a 12,000 acre research facility donated to the University of Alberta by Ruth and Edwin Mattheis. It is home to the Rangeland Research Institute (RRI), which conducts innovative research on grassland ecology, land reclamation and grazing systems.
